Lest We Forget.

Anzac Day is a time of reflection.
Reflection on those brave enough to sacrifice their freedom so that we can continue to live in freedom.
To this day, there are still over 3000 armed servicemen overseas in East Timor, Solomon Islands and in the Middle East.
We speak 'The Ode' on this day as a pledge to our fallen heroes that they will never be left behind on the battlefields, nor far from our minds. They will live forever in the soul of this country, as soldiers of our liberty.

The Ode comes from For the Fallen, a poem by the English poet and writer Laurence Binyon and was published in London in the Winnowing Fan; Poems of the Great War in 1914. The verse, which became the League Ode was already used in association with commemoration services in Australia in 1921.

FOR THE FALLEN

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children
England mourns for her dead across the sea,
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres,
There is music in the midst of desolation
And glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow,
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again,
They sit no more at familiar tables of home,
They have no lot in our labour of the daytime,
They sleep beyond England’s foam.

But where our desires and hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the night.

As the stars shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain,
As the stars that are stary in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.

Hotel LaChapelle

One of my favourite photographers.
Certainly one of the most inspiring and influential styles for my own personal artistic ventures (if you could call them that).

Unique and unabashedly confronting.
Disturbingly beautiful.
Dream-like and ironic.

Bursting.

Genius.

Currently reading (...for the upteenth time)

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way—in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only."

Bette Davis' eyes

Leibovitz in Wonderland

Today I stumbled across an old feature for US Vogue shot by Annie Leibovitz and as it speaks my language i feel compelled to share it with the rabbit hole (fitting, is it not?)

Natalia Vodianova stars as Alice, with designers Marc Jacobs, Karl Lagerfeld, Tom Ford, Donnatella Versace, Olivier Theyskens, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Viktor & Rolf and John Galliano all portraying the colorful characters in my personal favourite classic, Alice in Wonderland.

Natalia wears the clothes of each designer she shares the pictorial with..it is truly a maginificent spread. Fashion meets fiction. Get lost and enjoy.
